This book is the result of an exercise we conducted in our studio. The rules were straightforward. First, collect as many works as possible by one of our favorite artists – Eduardo Chillida. Second, prepare all the collected works in a printed version. Third, stare at the abstract forms for hours to find as many letter-like shapes as possible.
Our goal was not to build a working typeface, but only to play with form, proportion, and the relationship between object and void. We were not limited by any rules, and the whole process resembled more a form of improvisation than an organized project. The most important part was to stop, move away from the screen, forget about time, and focus on the act of looking.
The meditative nature of the exercise allowed us to relax, slow down and sharpen our attention, but also to learn more about Eduardo Chillida’s work and philosophy. Despite taking the form of a document summarizing our experiment, we hope that you find it interesting and even inspiring.
